Artwork Care Guide
Practical guidance for original paintings and framed works collected from Shima Lumen Gallery. Your artwork’s recorded medium, support and framing should always take priority over generic advice.
Light & placement
Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight and strong heat sources. Stable indoor light and temperature are preferable. Do not place an original painting directly above a working fireplace, heater or in persistent steam.
Moisture & humidity
Keep paintings and frames away from persistent dampness, condensation and wet walls. Avoid bathrooms or other spaces with repeated high humidity unless a qualified conservator has advised that the specific work and framing are suitable.
Dusting
For a dry painted surface, use only a clean, very soft, dry brush or feather-light duster without pressure. Do not apply household cleaners, water, alcohol, polish or spray products to the painted surface.
Handling
Handle with clean, dry hands and support the artwork or frame from both sides. Avoid touching the painted face. For larger works, use two people and protect corners and frame edges during movement.
Framed works
Lift from the structural frame rather than decorative edges. If glazing is present, clean only the glazing with a method appropriate to that glazing type and keep liquid away from the artwork and frame joins.
Changes or damage
If you notice cracking, flaking, mould, water exposure, significant warping or impact damage, stop cleaning or adjusting the work and contact the gallery or a qualified paintings conservator before attempting a repair.
